5 tips to secure your company data: management intervention

Serein Inclusion Team

Data is considered the new currency, and in the current scenario, company data protection has become paramount. Employees must have proper protocols in place when they interact with company data. As the management, few practices can be adopted to build a robust system that secures company data.

These are a few tips that can be incorporated into daily routines to ensure the overall security of the company’s data and to establish protocols to minimise risks of data breaches:

Building a culture of cyber awareness

  • Passwords: Employees should regularly change their passwords for logging into company systems or social media accounts. The password development should also be based on factors of uniqueness and strength. Periodic reminders can be sent to set the process in place.
  • Social media: Employees should refrain from photographing or videographing on company property, both physically and virtually. While using social media, employees should refrain from sharing sensitive information about company details or day-to-day functioning. This can further reduce the risk of unauthorised access to sensitive data.
  • Social engineering: Cyberattacks are often conducted after cyber criminals collate information based on the social media accounts of employees. It is pertinent that employees check before accepting random social media invites. At no point should the employee create a social media account based on their company’s email ID or contact information.
  • Downloads: In all instances, the employee should exercise caution while clicking links or downloading attachments shared on emails or social media. It’s important to verify the source and legitimacy of the content before interacting with it.
  • Separate professional and personal accounts: Employees must maintain separate accounts for personal and professional use to minimise the risk of inadvertently sharing sensitive company information. The employee should in all instances keep work-related discussions and interactions within designated channels or platforms.

Digital protection is not just an IT responsibility, it is a shared organisational commitment. A single data breach can result in financial losses, reputational damage, and legal consequences. Therefore, every employee plays a vital role in maintaining a secure digital environment.

By implementing these preventive measures, organisations can significantly reduce vulnerabilities. Beyond policies and tools, fostering a culture of accountability and awareness ensures that data protection becomes second nature to every employee.

In a world where information is power, safeguarding that information is not just good practice, it’s a business imperative.
