When a college student in Cuttack confided in her professor about a senior’s inappropriate messages, she was met with confusion—not support. “We don’t have a clear process for these things,” the professor admitted. The student never filed a complaint, unsure of her rights or what action could be taken. This story isn’t unique—and that’s exactly what the Odisha Women and Child Development Department wants to change!
Concerned by the inconsistent and inadequate implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act), the department has issued a fresh set of directives aimed at ensuring stricter compliance and broader awareness.
In a formal communication addressed to key officials across the state—including district collectors, principal secretaries and regional commissioners—the department stressed the urgent need for visible and active enforcement of the law in workplaces and educational institutions.
A central component of this directive is the mandatory display of “Do’s and Don’ts” boards in prominent areas across all institutions—offices, schools, colleges, and beyond. These boards are intended to clearly define what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate conduct under the PoSH Act, creating a constant reminder and awareness tool for all, irrespective of gender.
The department highlighted that awareness should not be limited to women and girls; men and boys must also be educated to ensure a comprehensive and respectful understanding of the law.
To support this initiative and build a truly inclusive and safe environment, institutions are encouraged to take the following steps:
- Visible Signage: Display the PoSH “Do’s and Don’ts” in reception areas, staff rooms, classrooms, and washrooms.
- PoSH Orientation Programs: Include a dedicated session on PoSH during employee onboarding and student orientation.
- Regular Sensitisation Workshops: Conduct periodic training and discussions to break myths and encourage open conversations about workplace behaviour.
- Proactive Internal Committees: Ensure Internal Committees (ICs) are well-trained, accessible and proactive in addressing complaints.
The state’s directive is not just a legal reminder but a cultural call to action!
